National park Kornati and Telašćica
Kornati National Park is the most isolated island group in the Mediterranean with crystal clear sea and numerous islands. Telašćica is a national park on the Adriatic with numerous bays and a salt lake that will leave you breathless with its impressive steep cliffs.
Kornati National Park is located south of Zadar, which consists of 89 islands and islets. It looks like a labyrinth of stones infested with crystal clear sea. According to legend, God created Kornati from white rocks that remained unused after the creation of the world. He threw them into the sea and looked at them and concluded that there was nothing he needed to fix. The name of the park comes from the Latin word "corona" which means crown.
The first inhabitants were the Liburnians, whose remains of fortifications are still visible today. During the Middle Ages, the main owners were the nobles of the city of Zadar. As the nobles could not pay the land tax, they sold the land to people from the nearby island of Murter, whose main activity was sheep farming. Shepherds built dry walls to mark ownership of pastures. Today, there are 330 km of dry stone walls in the entire area.
Telašćica is the most beautiful bay on the Adriatic, which in itself is very indented. The name Telašćica comes from the Latin word "Tilagus", which indicates the appearance of the bay, which consists of three parts separated by a narrow passage. Within Telašćica is Lake Mir, which has a higher water salinity than the sea. The lake is warmer than the sea in summer, and its mud has healing properties for the skin.
If you are staying in Vir, Zadar or the surrounding area, you have many options for visiting the National Park Kornati and Telašćica, such as organized boat trips from Zadar, etc.
